NorCal wins First Cal Cup 13-7

On January 9, 56 of the top California handball players converged on the South End Rowing Club in San Francisco to play for the 1st California Cup competition. Current and former National champions and other top handball players from northern and southern California competed in singles and doubles competition in Open, 35+, 40+, 45+, 50+, 55+, 60+, 65+, and 70+ divisions along with two 17 and under singles matches. The South End Rowing Club (located at Fisherman’s Wharf) hosted the event and provided outstanding hospitality all day long.

Competition was intense and after the first 10 of 20 matches, the score was tied at 5 matches each. Southern California went ahead 6-5 when they won both junior singles events. However, Northern California came back strong by winning most of the doubles matches and all three tie-breakers in the afternoon. The final tally had Northern California winning 13-7 matches. One of the many highlights of the day was Emmett Peixoto’s three game victory over Marcos Chavez. The 1st California Cup bragging rights stay with Northern California until 2012 when Southern California will host the event.

New Tournament Born in SoCal

The first ever Legends tournament was held November 20, 2009 at the Martinez Handball club.

The theroy was to bring together players over 50, who have been fixtures on the Southern California tournament circuit over many years. Some of the participants are familiar to many National tournament players as well.

Danny Carillo, Danny Jones, Tom Martinez, Jess Lopez, Bobby Morones, Andy Gastelum, Mike Kogan and Matt DeWeese to name a few.

Hospitality was outstanding. On Saturday morning Mike Kogan brought fresh tamales and Danny Carillo brought Menudo, sweet bread and pies. Later that day Larry Borunda brought carnitas and hand made tortillas. Then Mark Zamora made fish tacos. There was music, a campfire, waterfall, food all day, and good handball.

The final featured National Champ Danny Carillo with former Narional finalist Danny Jones, versus National Champ Tom Martinez teamed with former B Masters Champion Joe McNeil. The first game ended with a spectacular desperate falling backward (sapo) shot by Carrillo that rolled out right in front of Martinez at 20-20.The second game was dominated the first half by Martinez/McNeil to 20-10. The Dannys then took over and served out. Proving once again, it's not over till it's over.

Anyone interested in participating next year please call Tom Martinez at 909 244 9346.

Thanks go out to Tom Serrato, Andy Gastelum, Rosie Martinez, and Mark Zamora.

LAFD Winter Singles Results

The courts were busy at The Los Angeles Athletic Club on Saturday, December 5. The semi finals in two divisions and the finals in all seven divisions of the 2009 Los Angeles City Fire Department 4W Fall Singles Championships were completed with play beginning at 9 am.

There were a total of 108 players that competed in the two month tournament.

LAFD Commissioner Roy Harvey did a great job putting this event together and is now planning an event at Los Caballeros for late January.

Western Juniors Results

42 players from representing San Jose, Modesto, Sacramento, Santa Ana and Hawthorne gathered at the SOS club in Modesto for a day of competition. The play was spirited with fair and competitive play in all levels.

Two premire youth programs made this tournament a reality. The San Jose program that was first started by Sol Aber and now headed up by Roberto Chavez matched up with a new program from Modesto coached by Carl Rice.

The 11 and under division was a round robin and in the final match both Augustine Martin and Luis Bustos were undeafeted. Unfortunately after losing game one 21-12, Bustos was unable to continue forfeiting to Martin.

Willie Rodriquez, the sole entry in the 13 and under division from San Jose, came in first place besting second place Kyler Aqueche in match that went tie-breaker.

Anthony Collado breezed to a victory holding all of his opponents under 10 points.

The 17 and under division was the deepest division with 15 players signed up. In the upper bracket local favorite David Dart upset number one seed Issac Garcia from San Jose and the lower bracket Julio Garcia, also from San Jose, bested newcomer Christain Luna from Hawthorne, CA. In the finals it was all Julio Garcia.

Five player round robins are grueling in the best of environments but with all matches completed in one day there was extra effort needed. On top of that one player, Isidro Garcia, due to a work committment, could not start until later forcing him to play all of his four matches in 4 hours. He not only did it in 3 hours he was able to place second overall. Coming in first was Vince Gonzales, from Santa Ana, CA, without a loss. He was challenged by local standout Jimmy Myers.

Considerable thanks to all of the parents and coaches and to Tom Sove, Gary Cruz and the workhorse of the event, Everett Leon-Guerrero.

Junior Vasquez

The Junior Vasquez Tournanament held June 27,28 was extremely successful and good for handball. The draw - 106 players - was completely full, including the most kids we have ever had.Thirty kids participated. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors we were able to give them tennis shoes, gloves, USHA head bands, tournament shirts, and Dodger shirts.

The adults witnessed some very exciting matches all weekend. Twenty five hundred dollars was shared by all wining participants in the Open, A,B,and C divisions.

The Ruiz brothers ( Ricky and Braulio ) defeated Armondo Ortiz, and Greg Ramirez in the open final. The brothers were tough right from the start, and never let their opponents get anything going. Armondo was deadly from the front, but the brother strategy was to keep him back, and it worked. The Ruiz brothers may have won this battle, but the war is not over. We’ll see what happens next year.

Thank’s go out to ( please forgive me if i forgert someone or spell your name wrong) Nash from Converse, Larry Borunda from Boston transmissions, Tom Kopp from Owen gloves, Tom Serrato from Far West Meats, Mike Salgado, Jimmy Mendoza, Lou Morales,John Bowers, Roy Harvey, Stephanie Hathaway, Terry O’Reilly, Omar Penante of Sight Waves, Mike Palacios, David Goldberry, Tony Sokolosky, Bo Kennelly, Mike Kogan, Abel Carrillo, Gerard Chok, Andy Gastelum, Jim Cotter, Octavio Martinez, Sal Galvan, Mark Shelgren.

The Los Angeles Athletic Club take 2009 Winter League Final

The morning started on a great note with all of the enthusiastic players chomping at the big.

Play started with the singles match of Jerry Puga from La Fitness-Alhambra playing Carlos Chavez from LAAC. Carlos, a long time veteran, gave 10 points in the handicapped match. Play was very spirited with points going back and forth until the strong serves and consistent play of Chavez proved to be too much. Puga made some kills and pass shots but the strong play and deadly kills gave Chavez both games. The scores were 21-19 and 21-14.

In the second doubles match Alhambra chose Jimmy Ramirez and Tom Martinez to carry their banner. LAAC picked Manny Resendez and Jose (Guchi) Munoz to be their team. The match was played "even up" and turned out to be the match of the day going tie-breaker.

Manny played well up front, as usual, and had some roll-out serves as well. Guchi was his old self with fly kills, pass shots and ceiling shots throughout the match. All of the players used the 'defensive ceiling shots effectively.

Long time veteran, Tom Martinez, showed why he is a national champion by his array of shots and his ability to pick up tough shots. Jimmy demonstrated excellent effort especially with a 'behind the back' miraculous retrieve.

The win went to Martinez and Ramirez with scores of 13-21, 21-9 and 11-10.

The first doubles proved to be the decider and was played with even points. It was Marcos Chavez and Mike Palacios from LAAC versus Eddie Chapa and Abel Carrillo from LaFitness-Alhambra.

Game one was all Chavez and Palacios controlling the entire game and winning 21-5. Chavez refused to let any ball past him and when he did Palacios kept the ball in play.

In game two the action intensified with Chapa and Carrillo improved play but they lost by a respectable of 21-15.
